Canal Birthday Ride, 8th Feb 2012

DSCF5455The Brecon to Monmouthshire canal was 200 years old today. We decided to cycle the length of the route on the towpath to celebrate this.

The day was cold, clear and did I say Cold.  The canal was frozen over and ducks and Swans were walking around on the thick ice.

Having ridden the canal route a few times in the last year in preparation for our event on 19th May 2012 I’m still surprised at how interesting the route is.  Despite it going through the build up areas of  Cwmbran and Pontypool.  Once out into the countryside the wide views soon drew our eye from the canal.

canal-logoA welcome stop for a warm up, cup of coffee and a slice of cake at the Lemon tree in Gilwern.  I’d like to say Thanks to the ladies for being so understanding about the mud we brought into there Cafe, and if your ever in town and fancy a slice of cake, I’d recommend you stop by as it was quite Yummy.

After our stop we braved the cool day again and headed on to Brecon.  It wasn’t long before we were cold through again. But familiar landmarks started racing past as we neared Brecon.

We were greeted by two ladies from Builth Wells, they had come down to Brecon for the afternoon and were in the Canal Basin. They fancied walking down the Canal to the end.  As we chatted they proceeded to ask how long the canal was.  They couldn’t have asked better informed people.

Happy 2nd Centenary Birthday Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal.   I’m not sure that I will see your next. But I enjoied this one.

Watch out for our Canal 200 Cycle ride on May 19th 2012, when you can jion us to celebrate 200 Years of the Brecon to Monmouthshire Canal.
